Location
The Cookery School is located right in the centre of Modica, some 80 steps up from the 'corso' crossing the historical centre. Shops, bars and restaurants as well as the main sites of Modica are within easy reach.
Please note that Modica develops up the slopes of a Valley and steps are hard to avoid. If you feel that this may be a concern please get in touch for advice.
Itinerary
Day One - Welcome
A welcome dinner in the evening provides the first taste of Sicilian food and wine.
Day Two - Intro to Sicilian Cooking and Modica
After breakfast, straight into the kitchen for our first lesson followed by lunch. In the afternoon, we pay tribute to one of the most important products of South-East Sicily, chocolate!
Modica is famous for its chocolate and chocolate-based sweets, whose routes can be traced back to Mexican traditions brought to Sicily during the Spanish domination of the island.
We start with a special Modica's chocolate lesson and tasting, followed by a tour of the city. This is a walking tour since the cookery school is right in the heart of the historical city centre. We try to show you the main points of interest but also some of the lesser known back streets of Modica that offer wonderful views of the city and its life.
Finally, we visit the world-famous chocolate lab Antica Dolceria Bonajuto to taste their latest creations.
Day Three - The Seaside
This morning we take off for an exploration of the coast starting from a lovely winery close to the sea where we try to understand their wine-making production process and have a wine tasting plus lunch. In the afternoon we visit a fishing village to explore its history as an important outpost for tuna fishing in the area. Once back in Modica, you will have free time to enjoy the city on your own.
Day Four - The Iblei Hills
We start the day with a visit to an olive grove and winery near Chiaramonte on the so called Iblei hills to taste their extra virgin olive oil and wine. After the visit, we stop in the beautiful
baroque town of Ragusa Ibla. Back in Modica, we go straight into the kitchen for our third lesson.
At night we all sit round the table for a farewell dinner!
Day Five - Arrivederci!
We say goodbye to those heading back home and offer pointers for those staying on for more holidays!
About the classes:
The hands-on lessons lasts about 3 hours with a small break in the middle to sit down and relax outside on the terrace overlooking Modica's San Giorgio cathedral.
